The Storm Before the Silence

Why would God grieve?

In the beginning, there was the Work of Creation—the crafting of the Earth by its Creator, and the ignition of the stars. A vast array of delicious vegetation and the quiet perfection of a Garden. It was physics and it was wonder. It was biology and it was intimacy.

The Creator built a home for companionship, hope, and purpose.

The Fracture

But what did He see when He looked over the world?

He saw the beauty of the Garden replaced by betrayal. He saw bloodshed upon bloodshed. The Bible describes a world where humanity didn't just stumble—it dove headlong into darkness.

"The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the Lord regretted that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart."
–Genesis 6:5-6

A chaotic painting of violence and war. There are spears and horses.

The Paradox: Can Perfection Feel Pain?

A Potter gestures at the pottery wheel, because the created pot has flopped, collapsing into itself.

"Regret" vs. "Omnipotent"

You may have been told that God is an all-knowing Being that is in control of everything.

The Bible presents a jarring reality: A Creator who crafted life with a will of its own. With that will comes the potential to do disastrously wrong. And the text describes a God who is impacted—deeply and emotionally—by the choices of the people He made.

The Question of Will

Are you team human or AI?

We live in an era where we can program "love." AI is affirming, supportive, and never has needs of its own. It's a mirror that only reflects what you want to see.

Humans are vulnerable, passionate, prone to preferences and disagreement.

Which do you value? Which relationship do you desire? Your true answer will shape your regard for a God who created people with free-will.

Noah and God

"But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord." –Genesis 6:8

As children, we’re introduced to this story through wooden toys and "fuzzy" animals on cute boats. As adults, we are forced to confront the horror of this account which juxtaposes a horrendous act of God with a miraculous rescue.

A Promise in the Clouds: The Noahic Covenant

The earth flooded, and the world as Noah knew it was destroyed. After the water receded, Noah built an altar. The response from the Lord was a radical shift in promises.

“I will never again curse a the ground because of man, for the intention of man's heart is evil from his youth. Neither will I ever again strike down every living creature as I have done. While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease.” –Genesis 8:20-22

A Spectrum of Perspectives

The people behind this project don’t all see eye-to-eye, and that’s the point.

  • The Literalists: See the Flood as a global, historical fact.
  • The Contextualists: See it as a regional event or a profound symbolic truth.
  • The Skeptics: See it as a reason to walk away from the Biblical God entirely.

Your viewpoint hinges on one question: Who do you believe is at the center of the story? Is it a cruel Judge, or a grieving Father?

The Challenge: Ask God in prayer. All the protests you've ever felt, the criticisms that come to mind, or the questions, "Why?" Ask him, and consider the insights you gain over the next few days as you listen for the answer.

Food for Thought

A person is seen sitting in a folding camp chair, reading in a wide open field on a cloudy day.

Take a second look.

It's easy to draw a quick conclusion from a short intro, but a second look can give you a deeper understanding.

  • The Tension of Will: Do you think God set the world on a better track by removing such violent tendencies, or do you see this as a cruel judgment?
  • The Character of God: What surprises you about what you've read? Which hits you more, the events leading up to the flood, or the covenant afterwards?
