Church—Prayer, worship, and community

A Good Church is a Place of Worship–And a Community

It’s interesting that we say, “Go to church,” as if the church is a destination or organization. But this is not the original definition of “The Church.”

The True Church Is Not a Place or an Organization; It’s People

Peter was the first person to declare that Jesus was “the Messiah, the Son of the Living God.” People who believe that Jesus is the Savior (Messiah) are the people who make up the whole church—these people exist in many churches. You’re allowed to go to church (the services) even if you’re just exploring this idea and want to learn more. Church services not a place for perfect people. The true church is not an organization. It’s made up of all of the people, across all churches and the world, who profess that Christ is the Messiah and seek him.

If you go to a church—a church that’s organized in a home or building—it’s a place to pray, worship, learn, serve, and be in community with people whose belief is grounded on that profession. Together we seek to grow in the knowledge of God.

Your goal in finding a church is to find leaders and a group of people who are 1) Promoting God and the Scriptures more than they’re promoting themselves, and who are 2) being supportive, kind, and welcoming since God’s love is what truly reveals a connection to God (1 Cor. 13)

How to Find a Church

Finding the right group of people to grow in faith with is an important decision. Here are some ways to start your search:

Local Search

LOCAL SEARCH

Google churches, get recommendations from people you respect, and drive around your area. Look online for reviews for the churches that you see. Read their websites. View their Facebook page. Gauge your comfort level with their message and activities. If you’re new to selecting a church, visit several! Different people worship differently and it’s fine to find a place you’re comfortable in.
Know Your Bible

KNOW YOUR BIBLE

Knowing the content of the Bible helps you have wisdom and discernment in what’s being taught at a church. Download our Bible Guide to get started. You can often preview sermons online, which can help with your selection. Avoid churches whose message focuses on the supremacy of their church or the pastor or priest’s personal experiences. While personal experience can enhance a message, the primary focus should be deepening your understanding and experience of God.
Know Your Worth

KNOW YOUR WORTH

A church is ultimately the people. When you attend a church, that includes you! Receive encouragement, welcome, and teaching. Also, be the person you’d like to see at church. A church should be a comfortable place for you to share your own gifts in service as well as experiencing the service of the church. Grow in the knowledge of God, let your gifts shine, receive and share God’s love.
