They were given the world, but they wanted more.
Adam and Eve, the first humans God created, were given community, relationship, abundance, and the hope of creating more. Why was that not enough?
In the Garden of Eden where Adam and Eve lived, there were trees of “life,” and “the knowledge of good and evil.” The fruit of these trees are intangible to us now, but Adam and Eve could see, hold, and taste them. When a crafty serpent questioned what God had taught them, it would change the course of human history forever.
“Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?”
What happened next altered the course of human history and has been hotly debated ever since. It all started by questioning what God had said.
