Adam and Eve, the first humans God created, were given community, relationship, abundance, and the hope of creating more. Why was that not enough?
A Cunning Presence in a Beautiful Garden
In the Garden of Eden where Adam and Eve lived, there were trees of "life," and "the knowledge of good and evil." The fruit of these trees are intangible to us now, but Adam and Eve could see, hold, and taste them. When a crafty serpent questioned what God had taught them, it would change the course of human history forever.
"Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden'?"
This is the first glimpse we get of "evil" in the Bible. Observing its nature, we notice that its first tactic is to question the validity of what God has said.
When Adam and Eve chose to listen to the serpent, it altered the course of human history and "what God has said" has been hotly debated ever since.
